Synopsis
The Way of the Hive (Clan Apis) is a heartwarming story that teaches readers about the life cycle of honeybees throughout the lifetime of Nyuki, a honeybee. Nyuki begins her life as a chatty larva, later going through significant events in the life of a honeybee like metamorphosis and “the swarm. As she discovers her place as part of a hive through the influence and impact of her friend Dvorah, Nyuki goes from being afraid of the unknown and the reality of death, to understanding the importance that change can bring. Throughout the story she befriends other charming characters like a flower, Bloomington, and a dung beetle, Sisyphus, and goes from being seen as an obnoxious peer by other honeybees to being viewed as a mentor for the younger bees in the hive. As the story progresses through Nyuki’s, readers get to experience the complexity and beauty of a single honeybee’s experience.
Why should I read this book?
This book effectively and accurately explains the functions and life cycle of honeybees, which are something most people only have very surface-level knowledge of. The story is character-driven, and because of this it is incredibly engaging and a generally fun read. In addition to giving scientific explanations of the inner workings of a honeybee, it also tells a story with larger themes that address what it means to grow up and make self-sacrificial decisions.
Who is this book best for?
Older middle-grade students would likely find this book an engaging and informative read that could supplement life science classes taken in middle school.
